Storytelling is an Ancient Art, But it is not an art of only a bunch of experts in fancy offices can make it!

There is no defined structure to express a story, it can be in different form which help us to remember and imagine. Putting a business problem into a story will always helps the audience also to keep trying on solutions and solve the problems. Rather than showing only the PowerPoints with bar graphs, Stories engage our attention and help us understanding others.

According to a study, 65% of our daily conversations are based on Storytelling. Lets take a short time to recall the conversations we all had with our friends/families today… Most of it would be little stories!

“You can have data without information, but you cannot have information without data” — Daniel Keys Moran.

Data insights are potentially worthless if we can’t communicate them to the right people in the right way. Here comes the art of Storytelling, which requires creativity, vision, skill, and practice.
It is not only about having a great chart which have more statistical points from our Analysis. It is something about putting our insights from the data to the audience without missing the essence of our spark!

Data storytelling is the process of creating a story out of our data analysis findings, allowing the business people to possibly understand the complex insights and apply them to a business decision or action.
Storytelling with data will be much easier to narrate as because we have a context/fact (which is the data) to represent. Crafting a narrative is the most effective way to communicate, and visuals are the easiest medium for the human brain to understand. Therefore, data storytelling with visualizations is the most effective way to present data.

Storytelling with Data

“By combining the visual and verbal, we set ourselves up for success when it comes to triggering the formation of long-term memories in our audience.” ― Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic

Story with a Data!

Most of us will be familiar with the Titanic Dataset and the Titanic Movie. So, lets have a look into the Titanic dataset and how it is been connected with the movie…

Looking on to the Survival rate of the passengers from the Titanic Ship,
In the movie we all know that Jack made sure that Rose had a higher chance of survival. It is not only Jack, even though there were more male passengers onboarded than the female passengers, the survival percentage of female passengers are double of the male survival rate. This stats the Survival rate is highly correlated to Gender.

Also from the movie we may have observed that the high class passengers have survived more than of the low class passengers, even though the number of passengers are more on the third class. Which implies same in the data as the Passenger Class is highly correlated with the Survival rate.

These are few points from which we can able to relate the data with the movie.

“There is no real ending. It’s just the place where you stop the story.”

Thanks! :)
